Violent Femmes | 6/22/07 Review & Download

Last Thursday the music hungry faithful of Buffalo descended on the city for some true classic alternative rock and roll. Violent Femmes returned to Thursday In The Square in downtown Buffalo for the 2nd year in a row.

The crowd consisted of teenagers who “were brought up on the Femmes” to older fans in their 30’s and 40’s reliving their youth. The band played many songs off it’s debut album from 1983 to a very enthusiastic crowd.

One of the coolest things about being at these free shows in the Square all summer (besides the line-up which is amazing this year) is seeing how the crowd reacts to the band and the band to the crowd. I have seen this many times with the likes of Uhmphrey’s McGee a few weeks ago and Yonder Mountain String Band in 2006.

The Buffalo population loves live music and the crowd packed in with body surfing taking place throughout the entire set. The ‘Femme’s looked to be in their glory as well feeding off the energy of the crowd and improvising on a few songs.

Well enough of my rant….lets get to the good stuff. Thanks to the guys at UpstateTapers.org for taping and uploading this set. Click here to download this entire show via torrent >Violent Femmes 2007-06-21 Buffalo-NY

Here’s a few samples. The last three songs of thier set. Be sure to check out “Kiss Off” to hear the Violent Femmes doing some serious improvisational jams.

Trey Anastasio | To Release Instrumental Album

treyhorseshoe.jpg

Trey Anastasio’s recent run-in with the law for possession of heroin in upstate NY has sidelined him from going on tour or hitting up any festivals summer. In an effort to give Phish heads something during his down time he is releasing an instrumental album titled “The Horse Shoe Curve.”

Two of the tracks on the album , “The 5th Round” and “The Horseshoe Curve,” were recorded live. The song title “Horseshoe Curve” was taped at a 2002 show at the Amphitheater at Station Square in Pittsburgh. In a recent interview Trey stated “We were playing outside next to some train tracks that ran past the stage, right at the peak moment of the show, a really long train rumbled by blowing its horn. You can hear it on the record. It sounded incredible, the band started playing to the rhythm of the train and hence, the name of the album.”

I haven’t had a chance to listen to the Album yet but here’s some information I was able to come up with:

THE HORSESHOE CURVE track list:
1. Sidewalks of San Francisco
2. Olivia
3. Burlap Sack & Pumps
4. The 5th Round
5. The Horseshoe Curve
6. Noodle Rave
7. Tube Top Tony
8. Porters Pyramids

If you preorder The Horseshoe Curve will also receive The Lucius Beebe EP a five-song live CD which includes very special guest appearences by Jon Fishman, John Medeski and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra.

The Lucius Beebe EP track list:
1. Burlap Sack And Pumps
2. Coming To
3. Andre The Giant
4. Sidewalks Of San Francisco

Over the weekend moe. played a free show at the WYEP Summer Music Festival in Pittsburgh, PA. This was thier 2nd gig of the day. Ealier in the afternoon they taped an installment of the World Cafe at the Warhol Theatre.

From a fan at the show: “Simply blown away. The setlist was short and sweet. The city backdrop was lit up in the night when moe. took the stage. From the first snare grooves of St. Augustine I knew I was definitely in for a treat. The jams were insane, as the two guitarists exchanged the mind-blowing solos. The percussion was incredible”

Here’s a few from the set to help get you through your Monday.

Austin City Limits | Bob Dylan, Bjork, White Stripes to Headline

Austin City Limits returns to Zilker Park in Austin, Texas September 14th to 16th, 2007 with one of it’s best lineups yet. This event is 3 days with 8 stages and 130 bands.

ACL Festival offers a unique festival experience in downtown Austin where unlike most festivals where camping is most prevelant, ACL relies on a plethora of cheap hotels that are nearby in downtown Austin.

This festival attracs 65,000 fans each year and tickets generally sell out in the first weekend. For full lineup and festival information check out the ACL Festival website.
