Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad Live @ Club Infinity 09.13.2008 MP3

gpgds1.jpg

GPGDS killed it on Saturday night here in Buffalo.  I went to this show unsure of what to expect. I had heard the guys on Sirius and listened to a few of their shows on The Archive but wasn’t completely sold. I love keyboards in a band and GPGDS has a dynamic duo that laid down sick rhythms entire night. GPGDS music just makes a person feel good. It’s some kind of natural aphrodisiac that gives you a sense of elation that is rarely found in music. Think The Wailers meets The Dead and you’ve got GPGDS.

Who is GPGDS? They are a 6 member band from Rochester NY. The bands name comes from a Tim Robbins Novel who the bands members are fans of. In the book there’s a band called Giant Panda Gypsy Blues Band. They wanted to have an original name that wouldn’t be confused with any other bands. The band has been together since 2001 and released their debut album in 2006 titled Slow Down. Even though the band is from Rochester just down the road from Buffalo this was their first time playing here. They had a great turn out from their fans and promised to come back again soon.

I had planned on getting an SBD recording of the show but I didn’t have the right cables so I had to settle for an AUD recording. There is some audience chatter on some of the songs but overall it came out really well.

Donna The Buffalo Live @ Art Park NY 08.20.2008

dtbp8.JPG

Donna The Buffalo is probably the band that I’ve seen the most over the past several years that I’ve been going to shows. We see them multiple times each year at Blue Heron Festival and the Grassroots Festival. Every time out is a good show. I especially like the one’s in Western New York because the ‘Herd has a great showing and it’s a chance to catch up with friends that I don’t see every day.

This was the smallest turn out of any show that I’ve been to at Art Park this summer but it made it even better. The entire ‘herd was dancing and swaying the night away as DTB played quite a few songs off of their new CD Silverlined which is currently number 10 on the Americana Music Charts.

Big ups to Seth and Keith for taping and uploading this great set to The Archive and providing some most excellent pictures.

This an an audience recording but this venue is so loud it came out really good with minimal crowd chatter.

moe. Live @ Art Park NY 07.09.2008

(photos courtesy of Sharyn at WNYMedia)

This was my second time seeing moe. and they blew me away. Art Park in Lewiston is by far my favorite venue for live shows in WNY.

moe. knows how to headline a show playing for a total of over 3 hours. This set includes a sick 27 minute Brent Black as well as a mind blowing Plane Crash at the end of the second set.

Get out and see these guys while you can. They are currently on tour and will be taking the winter off after moe. down here in a few weeks.

Many thanks to the Daniel at Upstate Tapers for getting this show up.

enjoy!

JJ Grey & Mofro Live @ Lafayette Square - Thursday At The Square Buffalo, NY

mofro-front11.jpgJJ Grey & Mofro opened for Jimmy Vaughn and played an excellent set. The band sounded great and and the crowd turned out early to support these blues greats.

These guys hail from Jacksonville, Florida and have been impressing fans across the nation at many of the major festivals.

Grey first coined his blend of rhythm and blues, soul and funky rock and roll as “Mofro Magic” in 1997, based on the continuous southern slang being thrown around at a lumberyard in Jacksonville, Florida (JJ’s hometown) where he worked. According to his bio on the band’s website, Grey comes from a long tradition of Southern storytellers, and his songs often use the loss of his natural surroundings and the marginalization of the Southern culture he grew up in as metaphors in his lyrics.

Little Mountain Band has been lighting up the greater Buffalo, NY music scene for a couple of years now with a true jam band sound that is as unique as it is contagious. The band consists of Aaron Ziolkowski, Taylor Locking, Donavan Cudmore, Adam Schmidt, Brian Seibel, and Rob Enderle.

Each member of the band brings an incredible amount of talent to the stage. They have great stage presence and band chemistry which is evident in their song writing and tight improvisational abilities that are an amazing blend of jam and bluegrass. Check out the sample below.

GBH is one of the best kept secrets in NY and we’re giving you the sounds that show you why. Check out this recording of Jim Donovan of Rusted Root fame laying it down in this live recording.

Jim Donovan also hosted a most excellent drumming workshop on Sunday at the festival.

To find out when Drum The Estatic is playing near you or hosting a drum workshop check out Jim’s website at www.JimDonovanMusic.com

Many thanks to Jim for his generosity in allowing us to record and make this show available for download. If you like what you here I’d recommend picking up their latest CD  which can be found on their website.

Jakob Dylan Takes The Torch Live @ Thursday At The Square - Buffalo, NY 07.03.2008

jakob5.jpg

I’m going to keep this brief as I’m about to run out the door for the Blue Heron Festival but I wanted to get this up before I left as I’ll be coming back with a bunch more music to post and I don’t want to get behind.

Bottom line. Great show. Jakob Dylan has captured everything that is good about folk music. The crowd absolutely loved him. My dad grew up listening to Bob Dylan and it was surreal to see his son a generation later playing some incredible folk music for this Buffalo crowd.

Blind Melon Lifts Melonheads @ Club Infinity 06.08.2008 MP3 LOSSLESS

warrentravis.jpgBlind Melon is back in a big way.  Lead by new lead singer Warren Travis and featuring all of the other original members including guitarists Christopher Thorn and Rogers Stevens, bassist Brad Smith and drummer Glen Graham. Blind Melon was one of my favorite bands growing up in Florida as a teenager in the early 90’s. Seeing this re-incarnation of the band was a dream come true. We’ve covered a lot of shows in 2008 and this is the one of the (photo by dfrisi) best shows we’ve  seen this year  2nd only to Umphrey’s McGee at the Town Ballroom. For those of you who follow this site - that’s saying a lot!

The new lead singer is a perfect match for the band. While he does sound similar to Shannon Hoon he definitely has his own voice which is evident when the band breaks into some of their newer material. Read the rest of this entry »

Sun Shines On Three-peat for YMSB at Lafayette Square Buffalo, NY SBD

(photos courtesy of aneurysm9)

Last year they predicted it, this year they delivered. YMSB became only the third band in the 22 year history of Thursday At The Square to do “an evening with” at Buffalo’s best outdoor venue. After playing the past two years in torrential downpours the sun finally shined for their 3rd appearance. YMSB put on an excellent show playing two sets for a total of over 2 and half hours of intense newgrass.

This is a must have set for any YMSB or newgrass/jamband fans. Jeff Austin and the rest of the guys love playing for this crowd in Buffalo. For those of you who have been to a show at Thursday At The Square you know why bands enjoy playing here so much.

Its one if the few outdoor venue’s that continues to offer free jam band concerts in a downtown setting week after week. The fans pack it right in after work and stay till 10pm. The crowd surfing is wild and the interaction between the bands and the crowd is simply amazing.

Make the jump to download this excellent SBD recording. Read the rest of this entry »
