Jakob Dylan Takes The Torch Live @ Thursday At The Square - Buffalo, NY 07.03.2008

jakob5.jpg

I’m going to keep this brief as I’m about to run out the door for the Blue Heron Festival but I wanted to get this up before I left as I’ll be coming back with a bunch more music to post and I don’t want to get behind.

Bottom line. Great show. Jakob Dylan has captured everything that is good about folk music. The crowd absolutely loved him. My dad grew up listening to Bob Dylan and it was surreal to see his son a generation later playing some incredible folk music for this Buffalo crowd.

Blind Melon Lifts Melonheads @ Club Infinity 06.08.2008 MP3 LOSSLESS

warrentravis.jpgBlind Melon is back in a big way.  Lead by new lead singer Warren Travis and featuring all of the other original members including guitarists Christopher Thorn and Rogers Stevens, bassist Brad Smith and drummer Glen Graham. Blind Melon was one of my favorite bands growing up in Florida as a teenager in the early 90’s. Seeing this re-incarnation of the band was a dream come true. We’ve covered a lot of shows in 2008 and this is the one of the (photo by dfrisi) best shows we’ve  seen this year  2nd only to Umphrey’s McGee at the Town Ballroom. For those of you who follow this site - that’s saying a lot!

The new lead singer is a perfect match for the band. While he does sound similar to Shannon Hoon he definitely has his own voice which is evident when the band breaks into some of their newer material. Read the rest of this entry »

Sun Shines On Three-peat for YMSB at Lafayette Square Buffalo, NY SBD

(photos courtesy of aneurysm9)

Last year they predicted it, this year they delivered. YMSB became only the third band in the 22 year history of Thursday At The Square to do “an evening with” at Buffalo’s best outdoor venue. After playing the past two years in torrential downpours the sun finally shined for their 3rd appearance. YMSB put on an excellent show playing two sets for a total of over 2 and half hours of intense newgrass.

This is a must have set for any YMSB or newgrass/jamband fans. Jeff Austin and the rest of the guys love playing for this crowd in Buffalo. For those of you who have been to a show at Thursday At The Square you know why bands enjoy playing here so much.

Its one if the few outdoor venue’s that continues to offer free jam band concerts in a downtown setting week after week. The fans pack it right in after work and stay till 10pm. The crowd surfing is wild and the interaction between the bands and the crowd is simply amazing.

Make the jump to download this excellent SBD recording. Read the rest of this entry »

Ryan Montebleau Band Gets Down Live @ Nietzsche’s 06.13.2008 SBD

montebleau4.jpg

Last Friday night on the eve of the 51rst Annual Allentown Arts Festival The Ryan Montebleau band gave the Buffalo heads another night to remember. The band played to a packed house on their 5th trip to the famed Nieztche’s music club in the historical Allentown district of Buffalo.

This was my first time seeing the guys in concert and they played almost three hours of the best heartfelt foot stomping music we’re heard this year. The bands funky grooves mixed with amazing song writing had the place packed till the early morning with sweating ravenous dancers. Read the rest of this entry »

Codename Live @ Brass Lantern on 01.14.2008

2162114829_63f0654f68.jpgI was just turned on to these guys by one of our readers .

The band consists of Adam Nash (keys/piano), Jon Joffe (guitar), Greg Halbkram (bass), and Sal Galati (drums/percussion).

If you have yet to hear of these guys you’ve gotta check out their funky jams. These guys are from Philly and are currently on tour in the northeast.

“Codename’s songs are a fusion of tightly composed, high-energy progressive-rock arrangements, complimented by jazzy harmonies and funked out dance grooves. Their show is a true experience. The soulful connection is apparent between Adam Nash (keys/piano), Jon Joffe (guitar), Greg Halbkram (bass), and Sal Galati (drums/percussion), as their chemistry both on and off the stage combines unique energy, vision, and sense of adventure that all goes into the jazz-infused blast of funk rock that is Codename. Among their influences are The Grateful Dead and Phish, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield and Medeski Martin & Wood, Pink Floyd, Yes, Soulive and The Allman Brothers.”

Make the jump to check out a few samples from their show at The Brass Lantern in Reading, PA and download the entire show. They have a great presence on The Archive.

Disco Biscuits Throw Down @ Thursday At The Square 06.05.08

biscobflosquare4.jpg

Last night was sick. It was my 2nd time seeing Bisco and this is one of the best shows we’ve covered at The Square in downtown Buffalo. We got down there early and the guys from Philly opened at 6:30 with Kitchen Mittens. They moved through some of thier originals including a sick Jigsaw Earth jam. When they broke into a ruckus cover of Rage Against The Machines ‘Killing In The Name Of’ the Buffalo heads started moshing and jumping all over the place in pure elation.

The 2nd set opened with ‘Run Like Hell’ and closed with wicked cover of Nirvana’s Lithium just as the torrential downpour doused the bisco fans.

Below is the set list, and a few tracks from the show, and more pictures. Read the rest of this entry »

Tom Marshal Hints at The Return Of Phish

phish_logo.jpgPopMatters.com has a great exclusive interview with long time friend and Phish lyricist Tom Marshal. He explains that Trey Anastasio (who recently announced his first solo appearance since his arrest) is interested in getting Phish back together. Here’s a excerpt:

Marshall was elated about his recent work in the studio with Anastasio. “We’re on our fourteenth, fifteenth song in like two months,” said Marshall. “We’re extremely productive and got the drive again. I have the old Trey back, which is incredible.”

When pressed about where these new songs will end up, Marshall said they “could take a left turn into the Trey Anastasio Band or a straight turn to Phish.”

This is incredible news. Not only could the band be back in 2009 but they could be back with a new album and a fresh tour not just replaying the bands greatness from the 90’s but actually playing new jams. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for this long awaited return.

Mountain Jam 2008 Torrents & MP3’s

dsc00309a.jpgMountain Jam 2008 was another amazing weekend for the jam scene with mind blowing performances by the country’s best bands.

I wasn’t able to make it this year but we still enjoyed the festival from home. We had a party in the back yard with a fire going and and thanks to iclips.net we had sweet sounds of Umphrey’s and Gov’t Mule blasting through my stereo. For pics from the weekend check out the excellent photos from Dino Perrucci.

Here’s a few shows that have started appearing online. Be sure to check back for updates. Read the rest of this entry »
